  • A Dressage Clinic with Kyra Kyrklund Rating: 9.84, 12 Votes
    - It was a gathering of the clan the like of which we have never seen before at the Statene Park Indoor. The occasion? Kyra Kyrklund's dressage demonstration day and the visiting superstar did not let them down. Her record speaks for itself.

  • Barb Apple Clinic Rate It!
    - One note beforehand, this was not a beginning clinic, horses were supposed to have basics in place before the clinic. This was more to refine the horse.

  • Dave Seay Rating: 9.64, 14 Votes
    - I have just finished the last, in a series of four, Phase One classes of Dave Seay's Progressive Horsemanship program. I would just like to reflect on what I have learned, not only for myself, but also for several of my friends. I've learned a lot. Much of what I learned were things I thought I already knew but didn't really know as well as I feel I do now. And I have to say, throughout the program. I had my doubts if this was really the best for me and my horse. We had a bit of an attitude problem which I now feel was a result of me getting in too close and bad timing. Just not enough 'feel'. Dave was sometimes difficult but you don't learn from someone who is easy on you. You learn from someone who challenges, provokes and maybe humiliates you into either quitting or getting to the other side. I feel I'm coming out slowly to the other side. But it's like climbing a mountain. It's a struggle and once you're almost there, you see all these other mountains. Then you're hooked on the experience.

  • Dr. Robert Miller Rating: 10.00, 4 Votes
    - Dr. Miller started the seminar by saying that understanding these 10 characteristics of the horse goes a long way toward understanding how to get along with horses.

  • Dressage with the Stars... Rating: 1.00, 1 Votes
    - The name says it all - dressage with the stars - a show that reaches for the skies. An event that provides a window onto the dressage horses of tomorrow, through the Bates Young Horse Championship, while at the same time, highlighting our established superstars in the Gelpad Pacific League World Cup Dressage Final. This year our special guest was Michael Klimke, who kindly agreed to step in at the last minute after the tragic death of his father, Reiner.

  • Harry Whitney Rating: 8.25, 4 Votes
    - First off I must say that I hadn't heard of Harry Whitney prior to his frequent mention on this list. He got such good press that I thought it worthwhile to fly clear across the country to see him. I am very pleased that I did. Not only did I get to see a great horseman, but I met up with some old friends, made some new ones and got to put some faces to names and compare the walk with the talk.

  • John Lyons Rating: 10.00, 1 Votes
    - Everyone has heard of John Lyons. But have you ever been to one of his symposiums or clinics? I have been to some in the past, but the one I went to last weekend was the most impressive and I thought I would share with my friends some of the things I learned and my thoughts on his methods. Be aware that unless I was to attend many, many of his sessions and read all of his books and listened to all of his tapes, I don't think even then I would fully comprehend everything he has to teach. But certainly, I can share with you what I saw in the clinics and maybe you'll find something that may help you with your horse.

  • Kyra at Equitana Rating: 9.00, 3 Votes
    - There were Horse whisperers (shouters?!) seemingly at every Equitana corner, each yelling their own praises in increasingly strident tones, so it was so nice to settle back into the calm of Kyra Kyrklund's clinic on the Monday. Kyra is well aware that she is working within a tradition of dressage riding that builds on time honoured principles and the work that has gone before her (this in fact, is also true of the horse shouters, as one dedicated Equitana spectator who had attended all four days, and listened to all the 'experts' decided, 'they all say the same things, they just use different language, but they all seem to think they've discovered it by themselves!')

  • Lee Smith Rate It!
    - Lee was asked to do venues for 8 days at the Scottsdale Arab show. They took place in a round pen outside of the main arena. Lee's plan was to start a filly and continue each day with it. She was hoping to show people that natural is not slower but much faster than conventional ways of starting horses off. Lee started off riding her seasoned mare, Alibi, bridleless. I feel it was good so the group could do what she talks

  • Lee Smith Rating: 1.00, 1 Votes
    - I came to this clinic with a past history of having seen Saavyday, a 2 day primary clinic given by Lee and a 2 day level 2 by Linda Parelli plus several lessons from Mary Sutherland and had passed level one with Mark Smith (on a different horse from one brought to this clinic). I had never ridden in a clinic before but have shown a lot so am used to being in front of a crowd in an arena full of other horses. While I wasn't sure exactly what we would be doing there was the feeling that it would be similar to the previous clinic I have seen and that it would be "practice". WRONG!

  • Mark Rashid Rating: 9.00, 2 Votes
    - I found out a few weeks before the clinic that Mark's format is to give each rider/horse a private, one-on-one lesson while everyone else watches. When I first heard about this format, I was not too enthusiastic, since I was used to clinics in which I could ride and get instruction all day long. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that it was a perfect opportunity for me to ride Rambler, my "second" horse, a horse I have not ridden much. I'm a beginning rider and Rambler is a sensitive horse, and I've miscued him and confused him enough in the past to get myself bucked off a couple of times. I'm 52 years old and not eager to do that again, so I haven't been riding him. (Although I've don lots of ground work with him and really love him.)

  • Mark Rashid Rate It!
    - This weekend was the Mark Rashid clinic in Arizona hosted by Judy Ryder Duffy. What can I say that hasn't been already said about working with Mark? He is a spiritual healer. Mark's own words are "I am not teaching techniques". He is teaching trusting relationship between horse / rider and how to recognize when your horse tries for you which many of us miss and therefore end up cueing more than ewe needed. This about how to help your horse find the right thing by offering a slight change. I read it, as instead of making the wrong thing difficult it was more a matter of making the right thing comfortable and the wrong thing just a bit more work

  • Neil Pye (PNH Level 2) Rate It!
    - Magia and I went to a PHN Harmony clinic at McLaren Vale (South Australia) last weekend. The instructor was Neil Pye from NSW. Neil has done a good job of really making us use out body language and explaining lots of general points, and giving plenty of useful hints. I personally could have done without some of his sarcasms, and without his occasional "male chauvinist pig" remarks ("Here comes Rod. Don't forget, Rod, you are representing the GUYS!", or after a really beautiful performance of Sharon on her QH - "Ahh! Not bad! Not bad at all....for a girl"). He meant it in a humerous way, undoubtedly, just that it wasn't very much to my (and others) taste. But, apart from that, I enjoyed the clinic very much and have learned heaps!

  • Ray Hunt Rating: 1.00, 1 Votes
    - I went to see Ray Hunt for the 1st time yesterday in Del Mar, CA at Christian Clews Ranch. Ray would be starting colts. I wanted to see the legend himself and watch him work with some horses. Indeed, his work with horses was humbling, he was so respectful and he did not miss anything that the horse offered him. His words so full of truth. I have a great respect for this man and his message, and I am a better person for having met him.
