- Count on Worms
 - Fecal analysis will let you know if your horse is having trouble with
worms.
It used to be expensive and inconvenient, but monitoring your worm-control program has
become as easy as daily horse care. Just collect a small sample of your horse's stool and
mail it to a fecal analysis station where lab technicians do all the work.

- Deworming : Quest (Moxidectin)
 - Moxidectin has been marketed furiously as the new miracle dewormer for horses. In
fact, it does have some unique properties that set it apart from other products and make
it very useful in most deworming programs. It should be used cautiously, however, as it

- Immunity in the Foal
 - The foal is born with an intact immune system - all of the cells needed to fight disease
are present in the lymph nodes, bone marrow, thymus and spleen. In order to effectively
fight disease, however, it must live in its environment for a period of time so that its
immune system can be "primed" by exposure to organisms in its environment. The
immune system must learn about the organisms in the environment by continuous
exposure before it can mount its active immune response. Over time the foal's cells will
produce antibodies to specific organisms in order to protect itself from disease. This is
known as active immunity.

- Sure Shots
 - Learn what vaccinations your horse must have to stay healthy and
performing well. A good veterinarian vaccinates a horse for specific diseases on a particular schedule
according to the individual horse and the kinds of risks to which it is exposed. At the
same time, while some vaccines offer effective protection against particular diseases,
others don't prevent the horse from contracting the disease; they only minimize the effects
of the disease.

- Vaccinations
 - This has been a rather controversial subject lately, particularly, on the subject of foal
vaccinations. There are several vaccines available from different manufacturers and
different sources (your veterinarian, the feed store, other?). Here are a few guidelines
that you should follow in vaccinating your horse:
